IRCC’s published service standard aims to process 80% of complete Express Entry permanent-residence applications within six months of receipt. This timeframe begins the day IRCC confirms your application is complete and ends when a final decision is issued. However, actual processing can vary if IRCC requires additional documentation or if application volumes surge beyond projected capacities.
Applicants whose work permits expire after filing for permanent residence under Express Entry or a Provincial Nominee Program may qualify for a Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP), which allows continued employment until a PR decision is made. To be eligible, you must hold valid temporary status at the time of application and have submitted a complete PR application, including paid fees and all supporting documents. Once issued, a BOWP typically remains valid for up to 24 months, with extensions possible if your PR process extends beyond that period.
Every family-sponsorship package must include the completed Document Checklist (IMM 5287) as the top page to verify all required forms and supporting documentation are present. Those being sponsored must supply identity and relationship evidence—such as valid passports, birth and marriage certificates, national identity cards, and affidavits where applicable—organized precisely in the order listed on the checklist. Missing, misordered, or improperly certified documents are leading causes of delays and potential refusals.
Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) are administered by individual provinces and territories to attract candidates with skills or ties tailored to local labour-market needs; successful PNP applicants receive a provincial nomination that guarantees an Invitation to Apply for permanent residence. In contrast, Express Entry is a federal, points-based system that pools candidates for multiple economic immigration streams and issues Invitations to Apply based solely on Comprehensive Ranking System scores. While Express Entry draws occur at the federal level, PNP nominations often expedite PR timelines by bypassing or augmenting the standard points-based selection process.
You can check your application status online by logging into your IRCC account with the credentials you used when you applied. Once inside, enter your unique client identifier (UCI) and application number to view real-time updates and any outstanding requests. If you applied by paper, you can link your paper application in the same account. You can also opt in for email or text notifications so you’re alerted automatically whenever there’s a change. If you run into technical issues logging in, the IRCC help guides walk you through account recovery and troubleshooting steps.
